On behalf of the staff of the High Commission, the heads and staff of the offices of the Government of Jamaica in Canada, our Honorary Consuls, and my own family, I extend warmest Christmas greetings to all Jamaicans across Canada.  Celebrations at this time become even more meaningful as, in the spirit of generosity and goodwill, we find creative ways to incorporate the flavours and tastes of Jamaica into Christmas in Canada, making it a truly memorable and warm occasion in spite of the temperatures outside.

For many, the Yuletide season and the dawning of a New Year bring families, friends and loved ones together to share in the joy and love that so abound during this time of year.  Let us always remember the true meaning of Christmas and take the opportunity to express gratitude for  successes during the course of  the  year, always remembering those in need.  As we reflect on the challenges of 2016, let us also consider how these can become opportunities in the New Year.

Jamaicans in Canada were all heartened and proud as we revelled in the achievements of our male and female athletes who represented Jamaica magnificently at the Rio Olympic Games in August.  We are thankful that Jamaica was spared the ravages of Hurricane Matthew and joined in rendering assistance to our Caribbean sister nation which was severely affected. We celebrated with Jamaicans at home and in the Diaspora who were awarded with National Honours, for their invaluable contribution and service to the development of Jamaica.  We also welcomed ministerial visits to Canada which elaborated on initiatives for improved diaspora engagement especially with the younger generation; increased support for the health and education sectors in Jamaica and opened and explored new opportunities for tourism and investment.

For the many Jamaicans in the Diaspora, who now call Canada home, your continued commitment, dedication and selfless gifts of benevolence to Jamaica have done much to enhance the quality of life of  fellow Jamaicans and reinforced the economic and social  development of our beloved country.  Thank you all for your support.

I wish to convey my own appreciation to members of the Jamaican Diaspora and the network of Honorary Consuls in Canada for the many ways in which you have supported the work of the High Commission throughout the year.  Your continued engagement and collaboration will be vital as we implement activities in 2017 in support of sustainable growth in Jamaica.   In 2017, we will also observe the 55th Anniversary of National Independence which will coincide with the 150th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.

There is much to look forward to in the coming year so, as you enjoy the festivities of the Season, may the joy and peace of Christmas be with you and your families.

Have a wonderful and blessed New Year!

Christmas 2016 Message from the High Commissioner for Jamaica to Canada Her Excellency Janice Miller
